Summary

A husband’s obsessive desire for a child leads to an unexpected manifestation of his yearning in a nightmarish short story about fatherhood dreams by New York Times bestselling author Joe Hill。

Willy and Marianne’s farmhouse in Maine has acres of meadow and fresh air, and a lonesome bridle path in the forest along which Willy daydreams and ambles。 When he’s loaned a decrepit old baby stroller to cart his groceries home, the rickety squeak of the wheels comforts him。 So do the sweet coos of a baby Willy knows can’t be real。 Can it? In this twisted thicket, wishes come true—with a price。

Joe Hill’s The Pram is part of Creature Feature, a collection of devilishly creepy stories that tingle the spine and twist the mind。 They can be read or listened to in one petrifying sitting。

3 stars for a unique cult。 This wasn't bad for a short story。 It could have used another 10 pages。 I've read a few of Joe Hills novels, and I can say I liked them a lot better。 3 stars for a unique cult。 This wasn't bad for a short story。 It could have used another 10 pages。 I've read a few of Joe Hills novels, and I can say I liked them a lot better。 。。。more

Great ReadWhen they say "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree" this story proves it。 I stayed up late into the night to finish it。 Good plot and fast paced。 I will try to sleep now。 A five star read。 Great ReadWhen they say "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree" this story proves it。 I stayed up late into the night to finish it。 Good plot and fast paced。 I will try to sleep now。 A five star read。 。。。more

I like this。 It was really original

I expected so much more and all I got was a man having a repetitive mental breakdown over what his wife can’t control 🙄

Clint Read-Brittian

Very eerily creepy and spooky。

this could’ve been an amazing story but sadly it fell short for me

once again men need to see a therapist

I had to reread the end to fully twig what was going on but it was ultimately an interesting read - and just in time for Halloween! In a society that seems to see men looking after their own kids as babysitting them, the male insight of the parental journey was an interesting one。

Spooky short story about a couple that move to rural Maine after suffering a miscarriage。 Willy and Marianne need a change of scenery and the farmhouse is it。 Willy goes to the local market where he is loaned an old pram。 As he makes his walks to and from the market, he can channel all is anger and frustration on the loss of his baby。 He hears and feels the weight of a baby in the pram。。。and is not as frightened as he should be。

ShockingThe irony of how and what resentment can do to someone is clearly portrayed in this。short story。 Characterization, ploy, ANF everything n you hope for is here。

what self respecting man named william calls himself willy?

Beautifully written, with a great new take on a few classic tropes。 Emotionally very real, for such a short story!

This is a creepy short story written by the son of Stephen King。Willy and Marianne suffer a miscarriage and decide to start fresh in a new town。 While Willy is at the grocery store, the owner lends him an old moldy pram to cart his groceries home and the scariness begins。。。This was my first encounter with Joe Hill and it won't be my last。 This is a creepy short story written by the son of Stephen King。Willy and Marianne suffer a miscarriage and decide to start fresh in a new town。 While Willy is at the grocery store, the owner lends him an old moldy pram to cart his groceries home and the scariness begins。。。This was my first encounter with Joe Hill and it won't be my last。 。。。more

This one just wasn’t for me。

A story of how our anger and resentment can manifest itself into an ugly creature

A simplistic tale of grief and sorrow turned real。The hints obviously led to the conclusion。

Not the ending I expectedShort story, so a fast read。 Had some good insights & the relationship was realistic。 Would be interested in reading more by this author

I liked this short story。 The way joe tackled the lost of a baby(miscarriage in this instance) was very well done。 It ended abruptly like there should have been more。 But other than that very enjoyable。

I’m a big fan of American folk horror。 The Legend of Sleepy Hollow may have kicked it all off。 For me, it nearly starts and ends with Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery。 It sends a shiver every time。 Stephen King has forever tried to best it。 Pet Semetary and Children of the Corn immediately come to mind。 I believe King is haunted by Jackson。American folk horror explores the sinister underbellies of bucolic American villages, towns, and communities。 That is basically every King novel and story。 His s I’m a big fan of American folk horror。 The Legend of Sleepy Hollow may have kicked it all off。 For me, it nearly starts and ends with Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery。 It sends a shiver every time。 Stephen King has forever tried to best it。 Pet Semetary and Children of the Corn immediately come to mind。 I believe King is haunted by Jackson。American folk horror explores the sinister underbellies of bucolic American villages, towns, and communities。 That is basically every King novel and story。 His son has taken up the family business with admirable success。 The Pram is extremely good with moist breadcrumbs liberally sprinkled in this tidy tale (forget streaming, turn this into a play!)。 Any more said will result in spoilers but allow for a gross-out that is largely unnecessary。It too, is an homage to Jackson。 That’s okay。 Everything is an homage to something。 Recently, I came across Thomas Tryon’s Harvest Home。 It is an excellent folk horror novel。 Tryon has been mostly forgotten but King was a competitor to him。 Tryon was an interesting dude。 Just check out his Wikipedia entry。 He was a stage and film actor before becoming a writer。 Tryon’s first novel, The Other, came out in 1971 and presumably influenced King。 It was set in 1935 and focuses on the sadistic relationship between two 13-year-old identical twin boys: one of whom is well behaved while the other is a sociopath who wreaks havoc on his family's rural New England farm property。 Harvest Home hit in 1973。 King later petulantly tore it apart in 1976 in The New York Times, “It isn't a great book, not a great horror novel, not even a great suspense novel 。。。 Never mind the best seller list。 Mind this, instead: Sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph, it is a true book; it is an honest book in the sense that it says exactly what Tryon wanted to say。 And if what he wanted to say wasn't exactly Miltonian, it does have this going for it: in forty years, when most of us are underground, there will still be a routine rebinding once a year for the library copies of Harvest Home。”Lastly, if you enjoy folk horror then pickup the recent novel, The Only Good Indians。 It is truly chilling。 。。。more

It is in the blood。It seems, as in the old days, trade and even talent, can pass from father to son。 May they all live long lives and have not children to continue to entertain us and ours。

TerrifyingHoly crap lol books don't usually bother me。 But wow。 I winced several times。 This is my kind of genre and it was very well done! I will never look at a pram the same way again! As the title implies, this story centers around a baby。 Sadly William and Marianne lose their child without ever holding him in their arms。 To assuage their grief, they move out of the city and to a lonely farm。 Willy finds solace there, but will it be his undoing。WARNING: this book deals with grief over a miscarriage and contains disturbing imagery。 Definitely a creepy read to get one ready for Halloween。

I loved this。。。it's obvious Hill is Stephen Kings son and this story set a tone and sucked me right in。 Truly a haunting look at grief from a males perspective, this was creepy and delightful。 Trigger Warnings: miscarriages, COVID, depression, dead animals。 This is part 1 of 6 of the "Creature Feature" series, bringing some amazing horror authors together for some 2023 Spooky Season creeps!
